Eagle class set for Sayers Croft...

DAY 1

The Eagle has landed... at Sayers Croft...

Landed, grounded...totally in their element and enjoying their freedom - As I write the Eagles are all together playing on and around the field next to our dormitory, Rudgwick. And when I say together, there is a multitude of different games taking place, but at times they all crossover or interlink.

All settled successfully and following an orienteering session they know their way around the site. Looking good for the navigation skills needed for Pitch Hill on Day 2! Late afternoon saw them building shelters in the woods, in fact the best shelters we've seen! And by that I mean that the shelters nearly kept them safe from the 'bears', 'hurricane-force winds' and 'torrential downpour / tsunami' that beset them!...nearly, but not quite!:) I think some of them would quite happily have spent the night in the wilds. Late evening we set out on a nightwalk, in pursuit of the wildlife of Sayers Croft. We'd spotted a deer in the long grass at the edge of our field just before setting off and down by the stream spotted its tracks where it had made a crossing. The 'wildlife' enjoyed a game of manhunt before heading for bed at the end of a fantastic Day 1. Awesome Eagles...and we told them so, so if that doesn't put them on a high we'll leave it to the ascent of Pitch Hill tomorrow...

DAY 2

The sun rises over the Eagles and today we take on the mighty Pitch Hill... Will those weeks spent studying mountaineering pay off?

Well 2016 saw us fighting our way through a mighty river as we reached the top of Pitch Hill, this year couldn't have been more different with terrain more akin to trails in some of the more desert-like regions of North American trails. Pitch Hill duly conquered the Eagles took some time out before returning to the centre to reflect on their achievements and challenges today. And actually, as will be the case time and time again this week, those that found the day more difficult and a real challenge...well there's is the real achievement, not those of us who enjoyed a stroll in the magnificent Surrey countryside. Asked what I enjoyed most about the day... that would be the unique difference that each Eagle class brings with them to Sayers Croft; and this year they are exceptional switched on to recognising and to acknowledging it in each other. A thought, a privileged thought - today it occurred to me over the years how many older siblings I have climbed Pitch Hill with :)

DAY 4:

It's 7:38, the sun is shining across Rudgwick field, the coffee's on... and all is silent... so far...

Eventually emerged from under the duvets to enjoy a morning of pond dipping. Apparently the great diving beetle's jaws close-up are more terrifying than an Eagle hiding under a duvet!

This afternoon saw the Eagles soaring to new heights and tackling the climbing wall. Last saw them wandering around the maze...
