Year 3 (Kingfisher)

Welcome to Year 3!

Outlined below is what we will be learning about this term and some general information about the class.

During Term 1, we will be learning about…

Changes in Britain through the Stone Age

We will be asking historical questions to find out about the Stone Age and discovering about their homes, food, animals and their tools. We will be creating cave paintings and building prehistoric models!

We will be exploring a range of texts this term including Stig of the Dump and How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth! Both are aimed to ignite the children’s love of reading and we will be writing instructions, non-chronological reports, diary entries and our very own play script!

General Information

Staff in Kingfisher Class

Mrs Brown is our teaching assistant and she will be in class every morning to support and extend the children’s learning. Mrs Bale is also joining Year 3 this year and we are fortunate to have her every Thursday teaching in class.

Drink and fruit

Please send your child into school with a water bottle. The children have free access to their bottles throughout the day and naturally the water is replenished when needed. Fruit or chopped salad/vegetables can be sent in for the children to eat at break times.

Reading

In Year 3, the children return and choose their own books to read at home. Not only does this promote independence but the children pick books that interest them and therefore get more enjoyment from their reading. We will remind the children regularly but books can be changed daily by placing them into the reading tray. Please ensure your child reads at least 5 times a week, leaving comments and signing the reading record.

Year 3 is an exciting year as the children transition from infants to juniors. Weekly swimming lessons take place in Year 3 as well as having communion classes and in the spring term, make our first communion. This is a wonderful event, and a time for celebration among our families and friends.
