Year 3 (Kingfisher)

Welcome to Year 3, Kingfisher class!

We hope that you are all safe and well after the summer break.

Year 3 is the first year in Key stage 2 so can seem very different but we hope it is an exciting year as the children transition from infants to juniors.

During Term 1, we will be learning about…

The Stone Age

We will be exploring how the Stone Age began and ended, how humans survived, investigating evidence of the Stone Age and what was happening at the same time in other parts of the world.

We will be igniting the children's love of reading with our texts based around our topic which are: 'How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth' by Michelle Robinson, 'Stone Age Boy' by Satoshi Kitamura, 'Stig of the Dump' by Clive King and 'Cave Baby' by Julia Donaldson. We will be basing our writing around these text.

In Science, we will be looking at a range of rocks, grouping and comparing them through hands-on-observations and through using scientific equipment.

The Christian family will be our new topic in RE. This topic has a strong focus on the Sacrament of Baptism.

General Information

Staff in Kingfisher Class

Mrs Oliver and Ms Cole will be in class every day to support the children with their learning. Mrs Ward will be in class Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Mrs Bale will be in class on Thursday and Friday.

Drink and fruit

Please send your child into school with a water bottle. The children have free access to their bottles throughout the day and naturally the water is replenished when needed. Fruit or chopped salad/vegetables can be sent in for the children to eat at break times.

Reading

In Year 3, the children return and choose their own books to read at home. Not only does this promote independence but the children pick books that interest them and therefore get more enjoyment from their reading. Books can be changed on Tuesday and Friday. Please ensure your child reads at least 5 times a week, leaving comments and signing the reading record. We encourage you to ask questions as your child reads to gauge their understanding of the text which the children are reading.

Uniform

Please ensure that all school uniform, PE kits and coats are labelled. This makes it easier for the children to find their belongings independently and prevents items not being returned. During the autumn and winter months, we ask that the children bring in outdoor shoes, separate to their PE shoes, to wear on the field at lunchtime.

Year 3 is an exciting year where the children begin weekly swimming lessons as well as having communion classes leading to making the Sacrament of first holy communion. This is a wonderful event, and a time for celebration among our families and friends.
